Being 5’11, finding clothes that actually fit is a bit of a conundrum. It’s a rare occasion to go to a store and find jeans and dresses that fit well and are long enough. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve held up a dress to my Mom in a store and she respond with “Is that a shirt?” ~Insert me sadly putting the dress back on the rack~. Why can there never be dresses long enough in store??? I always felt like no matter the occasion, finding a dress that fit my schools dress code back in the high school days, to weddings, to church, to anytime I would want to dress up, it always felt like as a tall girl I would have to put in extra effort to find something that worked. This is one of the reasons why I’ve wanted to start a blog for so long, to help fellow tall girls and make it easier for them to find clothes that are made perfectly for them. I want to document my experience of trying these products to see what works and what doesn’t. I want to try these brands so that you don’t have to, so you can save time and money!
This then leads us to my first time trying the ASOS tall section. I’ve always known it was there, but never wanted to splurge on the items I saw in their tall section…until now. I only got four pieces that ended up being on sale, but I think these items are a perfect transition into the fall season. At some point I would love to try their business attire, but this time I ended up going for a pair of jeans, pants and two dresses. I should mention that I got them all in a size 8 and almost freaked when I opened my package to see a size 12 on all the items! No worries though, because some of ASOS’s sizing are UK sizing so a UK size 12 equals a US size 8. Panic over, now let’s begin!
ITEM #1 Long Sleeved Black Dress
This dress looked so cute on the model on the site, but I’m surprised at how short this dress actually was when I tried it on. It has loose bell sleeves that have an elastic band so that the sleeves won’t be rolling up and down throughout the day. I got it in a size 8, and while the sleeves fit perfectly and were long enough, I was taken aback by how short the dress itself was. I thought that a tall size meant that the actually length of the dress would be longer than a normal dress? It’s comfortable and very flowy, but I’m not going to the grocery store reaching for things on the top shelf at any point in time if ya know what I mean. It is not a super thick material, but it does have some weight to it making it not see through which is a plus, but yea, not the actual length I was expecting.
ITEM #2 Burnt Orange Wide Legged Pants
I loved this item on site just as much as I loved it in person. Ever since being a Giants fan in 2010, I LOVE burnt orange. It screams Fall and it is one of my favorite colors. I don’t have anything in my pant’s collection like this, so I was super excited to get my hands on these. The fit of these pants are great. They are loose and come right above my ankles and I love the overall look. They are a lightweight and breathable material. The waist is stretchy and fitted, but easily secured with the belt while the rest of the pants are looser. I’m planning on wearing these as much as I can during the Fall season!
ITEM #3 Navy Off the Shoulder Floral Dress
After graduating from college, I purged a lot of the old dresses that I had had for a while (like since high school) and was “in need” of some new ones. Ok, you caught me,I wanted some new ones. So while exploring the site, I came across this navy dress. I am all about anything off the shoulder, and fell in love this dress. It is lightweight, but not lightweight enough to be see through. I also want to mention that this dress does have a belt that is the same floral pattern, but it blends in so well with the overall dress that you can barely tell it’s there! It also has the same elastic bands on the sleeves as the previous dress to make sure that the sleeves stay in the same place all day long. The upper body fits great and the sleeves are long enough, but I ran into the same problem here that I did with the black dress. The dress itself doesn’t feel long enough to be considered tall.
ITEM #4 Distressed Denim Jeans
I was so excited when I saw these jeans on the ASOS site. I’ve always wanted a pair of distressed boyfriend jeans and they come in a tall size?? WIN. I’ve ordered ASOS Denim shorts before in a size 8 and while they are a little snug (because I think I’ve gained some weight this summer) they still fit well enough. Not perfectly, but hey I at least get them zipped up! So with this in mind, I ended up going with a size 8 for this pair of jeans. As you can tell by the picture, that was a bad decision. These jeans were lighter in material than what I expected with your typical denim and didn’t have much stretch to them, but I never imagined they wouldn’t be able to fit me at all! The length on these is great, but if you have a booty like me? I’d recommend sizing up.
CONCLUSION
Overall, I do like the pieces that I got from ASOS. The real winner for me is the burnt orange pants because they were so comfortable and everything that I wanted them to be. For the dresses, although I do plan on wearing them, I am still surprised that they didn’t feel longer than a regular sized dress. If you are okay with your dresses being a little bit shorter and showing off your amazing legs, I’d recommend these dresses. But if you have a strict school dress code like what I did back in the day, then I wouldn’t recommend going for them.
This honestly makes me want to try more of the dresses to see if they are all like this, and maybe try their tall maxi dresses and jumpsuits just to see what they’re like. Stay tuned! And lastly, moving onto the jeans…I think I’m going to size up next time. This is another confusing thing about shopping. With my size 10 tall Old Navy Jeans, they were a little too long and were a little too loose. And I have a size 8 of Tall target jeans that fit like a dream! ASOS does have a size recommendation on their site which is helpful, but I guess I need to update mine because it led me astray this time.
